Not many people realise that the Search Engines see www and non www website addresses as two seperate websites! Because in truth they can be.
So I could have some backlinks coming into :
and some into
Which effectively means my Google Page Rank has been divided between two sites… argh!
There are two ways to prevent this
A) Use google webmaster tools to glue both www and non www together in the eyes of Google. More information can be found here.
B) Use a 301 redirect in your .htaccess file. A 301 redirect is the most efficient and Search Engine Friendly method for webpage redirection. You will have to get your web designer to do this for you, if they know how. You can read more about this here
You can check if your website has a 301 redirect via this Redirect Checker
If you check this site you should get:
Checked link: http://www.making-your-own-website.co.uk
Type of redirect: 301 Moved Permanently
Redirected to: http://making-your-own-website.co.uk/
Every website owner should at least accomplish option A, as it is free and easy-ish to accomplish. If I get time I will make a tutorial on how do do this.
